The Wonderful World of Wreaths

I absolutely adore wreaths and these days they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and styles But what do you know about these gorgeous works of art? How did they come about a? How are they made and why do we have them? Are there any symbols or meanings behind them? Read on to find out. I enjoyed researching this one.

I'm sure you've seen them adorning the heads of Greek and Roman characters in those epic/historic movies. Wreaths are believed to have originated in Greco-Roman times. They were used as an adornment that could represent a person’s occupation, rank, achievements and status. Laurel wreaths were used to crown victorious athletes at the original Olympic games.

A wreath is an assortment of flowers, leaves, fruits, twigs, nuts, pods, seeds and various materials that are constructed to form a ring. Today the wreath has evolved significantly and are not just worn on the head or around the neck but are now used to adorn our homes. They are also used in ceremonial events in many cultures around the world including Christmas, advent, funerals etc.

These days the items that can be included on a wreath are so diverse and the symbolisms that can be depicted are also just as diverse. Wreaths are as easy to make but also just as complicated. They can be made with fresh flowers or faux flowers.

I have designed four gorgeous wreaths for the holiday season. I am so proud of this collection which was lovingly handcrafted with you in mind.

The first is the Luxury winter wonderland autumn/Christmas wreath Add a touch of luxury to your home décor this Christmas with this gorgeous all-white, ivory and green winter/Christmas wreath made up of frilly peonies, hydrangea bush, snowy white pine bush, two-tone mini tea leaf, snow-kissed pine cones, berries, dried green split limes, gold baubles and a touch of sweet-smelling cinnamon sticks. If you look closely, you'll see nestled warmly in the centre of the wreath a little baby robin. This wreath is approximately 50cm in diameter.

Next is the Red Peony and Roseberry Wreath This gorgeous winter/Christmas wreath is made up of red and burgundy peonies, roses, daisies, frosted berries, pine cones encircled by baby eucalyptus leaves, lightly kissed with the fascinating browns and oranges of autumn. If you look closely, you'll see two beloved red-breasted robins snuggled warmly in the centre of the wreath.

I chose the warm reds, oranges and browns to evoke warmth and comfort while at the same time provoking excitement and energy fo the season.

The next wreath is the Christmas bow and red peony wreath

This lovely large bow half winter/Christmas wreath is made up of frilly peonies, red roses, snow-kissed pine cones, acorns and a touch of sweet-smelling cinnamon sticks. If you look closely, you'll see perched merrily on the corner of the wreath a little baby robin. This wreath is approximately 38 in diameter and the bow is hand-tied by yours truly.

Last but not least is my absolute favourite (but of course that is just my personal opinion. I made them all with the same love, care and attention to detail. The Pods, seed and cones wreath is exactly what the name says it is.

This lush winter/Christmas wreath is made up of natural pine cones, frosted mini pine cones, alder cones, sabulosum cones, eucalyptus bell pods, putka pods, natural acorns, sweet-smelling cinnamon sticks, aromatic scented star anise, berries and gold baubles. If you look closely, you'll see nestled warmly in the centre of the wreath a little baby robin. This wreath is approximately 50cm in diameter.
